About the Role
The Site Manager is the most responsible person on site whilst open - they are essential for making sure the site runs smoothly and for dealing with any issues, crisis management, organisation and labour that must take place for the site to continue running operationally.
They are supported by the Underbelly Management team on an ongoing basis, but must have the knowledge and experience to be the most responsible person on an incredibly busy site with a large footfall.
Site Manager Responsibilities
- Responsible for the overall management of the entire site, with varying levels of responsibility:
- Directly managing the Security team and the Cleaning team to ensure the site runs at its full operational capacity
- Supporting the bar management team, the front of house management team, the box office management team and the reception management team to ensure they have what they need from the site to efficiently and effectively run their departments
- Responsible for making the decision to evacuate the site and stopping all/any performances in any situation, with support and final sign-off from the Underbelly Senior Management team
- Responsible for all health and safety on site during the run, including all fire safety, supported by documentation from the Underbelly Senior Management team
- Performing any site maintenance that is required to keep the site running smoothly, utilising support from the Underbelly Senior Management team and responding to any requests from said team - alerting the team to any larger issues
- Monitoring and dynamically assessing crowd management at the venue and the surrounding boundary areas. Leading and supporting the Security team on this should they require it.
- Opening and closing the site at the designated time each day, including unlocking/locking the site, checking all fire doors, walking fire escape routes, checking fire equipment, arming/disarming fire panels accordingly, checking First Aid Equipment and all other key holder responsibilities
- Continuously monitoring and upholding the high standards of cleanliness and presentation of the sites, leading and supporting the Cleaning team should they require it
- Supporting the Senior Event Producer to manage daily food trader operations. This would include ensuring the traders have the resources they need to trade and completing spot-checks to ensure they are adhering to Food Safety and Hygiene and site safety protocols.
- Liaising with the Underbelly core team to receive any support you may require and completing Site Manager Reports thoroughly, so as to alert the Senior Management team to any larger issues that require immediate or ongoing support
- Maintain the strong relationships with any stakeholders, such as the University of Edinburgh, acting as a key point of contact, addressing any concerns they might have about any aspects of the site or any effects of the site on the surrounding area
Job Requirements and Experience
Required Experience
- Proven site and/or venue management background, with experience of festival sites an advantage
- Experience of busy sites that require constant attention to continue to run smoothly
- An attention to detail and a willingness to be proactive and search out operational or production issues that need improvement
- Good working knowledge of health and safety and fire safety in an events environment.
- Good staff leadership skills, a willingness to proactively check in with each team on the ground on a regular basis and see if support can be given
- Ability to create a positive work atmosphere and to spread this positivity to the rest of the workforce
- Excellent leadership and teamwork skills - a willingness to always lend a hand if any team requires support
- Some conflict management skills - ability and willingness to step in and diffuse a situation between two individuals, be that customers or staff
- Confident with power/hand tools (own tools preferable)
- Some carpentry experience

- Personal Licence holder
- IPAF or Forklift ticket
